Canada’s EV & PHEV Incentives Explained — And How to Maximize Them with CarCostCanada
Introduction
If you’ve been thinking about switching to an electric vehicle (EV) or plug‑in hybrid (PHEV), you’ve probably heard that the Canadian government has started offering financial incentives. What’s less clear is how much, who qualifies, and how to actually claim them. Add in various provincial and territorial rebates, and the picture gets even more confusing.
This guide breaks everything down plainly — and shows how CarCostCanada can help you turn these programs into real, measurable savings on your next vehicle.
The Federal Program: Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP)
Canada’s main national incentive is the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP), which replaced the earlier “iZEV program”.
What EVAP Covers
- Battery‑electric vehicles (BEVs)
- Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs)
- Plug‑in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) that have sufficient electric range
- Not included: Conventional hybrids (HEVs) without plug‑in capability
- The vehicle must be built in Canada, or a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada
How Much You Can Get
- Up to $5,000 for eligible BEVs and FCEVs (in 2026)
- Up to $2,500 for eligible PHEVs (in 2026)
How It Works
- The funds are applied directly at the dealership as a point‑of‑sale rebate
- Generally, only vehicles under the specific $50,000 purchase price cap qualify
- However, all Canadian made BEVs, FCEVs and PHEVs qualify, regardless of price
Official Federal Resource
- Government of Canada — Zero‑Emission Vehicle Incentives
- Government of Canada — Current List of Eligible Vehicles

- The light duty portion of the program has ended but some rebates are still available

- This program was temporarily suspended from February 1 to March 31, 2025
